F A Cup

A collection of midseason, meaningless friendlies, played in homage to a once great competition, which ceased as a tournament proper after the 1973 final, due to lack of interest and fixture congestion.

These friendlies allow small clubs (see Cardiff City) to have their own "Cup Final" and raise much needed income through TV revenue.

The format changes yearly but is normally restricted to a one-off game called the “third round”. The most notable exception to this was in 1987, when renewed interest allowed the competition to run up to the semi-final stage.
